my last monday at the mayor's

Remember that time I was asked to sit in during the receptionist’s lunch break and 40 taxi cab drivers, who have been out of work for three weeks and had led protests at the courthouse over a month ago, filled the reception area seeking that the mayor address their poor working conditions and low wages?

Oh, right, that was five minutes ago. I sat eating my lunch and answering phone calls as the drivers talked to the mayor’s chief of staff and office of neighborhoods.

News Channel 5: Hundreds Of Nashville Taxi Drivers Call In Sick

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Some Nashville Taxi Drivers have decided to let city leaders know they are tired of poor working conditions, so they called in sick.
Monday at noon the hundreds of members of the Nashville Metro Taxi Driver's Alliance decided to take a sick day on the steps of the Metro Court House.
The taxi drivers want Mayor Karl Dean and city leaders to know how invaluable they are to the city's tourism.
In late July, hundreds of workers went on strike outside the courthouse trying to take a stand against low wages.
According to a recent survey, Nashville cab drivers only make a little over $2 an hour, after they pay various fees to the city and cab companies.

I’m not sure what the mayor’s role in addressing this is, but my heart goes out to them. Two dollars an hour? Who can live on $2 an hour? I know in third world countries people live off that much a day, but you just don’t expect that in the United States, not to mention your own hometown.

Justice, Lord, may your justice come on earth as it is in Heaven. If not in this life, then we have the hope that it certainly will in the next. We who believe in you have that hope.
